I am hoping to get away with this post although it is a bit OT.

For NetRemote use, is Dell Axim X5 300MHz/32MB a good one?

1. No need for a CF 'jacket', right?
2. How long will the battery last if I always keep it on to avoid the reconnect issues?
3. Does it come with a pointer pen?

Other pro/cons?

Just received one yesterday, it will be dedicated to Netremote only.
I'm installing everything on it and should be able to give you some "real feedback" soon.

Not sure what you mean by CF 'jacket'.
If you mean slot, it has one and I'll be using it for a WiFi card.

Eric.

CF jacket is like the old iPAQ's - they have a plastic casing that clips on to provide the CF (or PCMCIA) slot.

Anyone know of any affordable 802.11b integrated (not slot) devices? That is the coolest solution - my 802.11b CF card is a bit ugly.

Maybe we should have a good NetRemote hardware deals thread. Tablet PC's and PocketPCs.

Tor:

The Dell Axim 300Mhz ROCKS for a NetRemote device. I use mine exclusively for NR. I really like the rubber grips and the recharge cradle -- I leave it in the cradle most of the time and use it from there. The cradle has a cool blue Dell logo on it that looks good in the dark (but may be a bit bright for some with really dark theaters).

Dell is rumoured to be developing 2 new PDA's the X3 and the X7. The X3 will be an entry level model, and the X7 will be a higher end model featuring built in 802.11b. I hope that this is true...cuz' I'll be getting a Dell.

Dave - don't look for those before Christmas time.....

I have the Dell Axim X5 myself.... can't comment on battery time as I don't have everything setup yet... BUT SOON!!!

What's your source on the X7? I heard early Q2 which seemed reasonable to me, but that is through a Friend of a friend of a friend of a.... Waiting until Q4 would be an awfully long product cycle for any company, especially Dell. I sure hope that they come sooner than that. I definitely want something with built in 802.11, and I don't like the design of the Toshiba e740, and the newer iPAQs don't do it for me either.

Seems like I have a buyer for my old RC5000 :)

Out of interest, what's the price of Axim X5 over in the states? It's about 360 USD here.

TorAtle - paid 199 USD with rebate

Dave - Dell doesn't make it... they jsut box and ship it. The info was explained rather well in the Dell Axim thread on the pocket pc passion thread.. right HERE (http://www.dalecoffing.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=60)

EDIT - actually I didn't indentify the exact message in the post, just the Dell Axim thread in the forum.

I've got the 300 mHz variety, and it works great for NetRemote. I walked out the door, including SMC wireless NIC for $288 USD.

A lot cheaper than the Audiovox Maestro, which was $450 before a wireless NIC. Although the Maestro works just as well for what we're doing, currently.

I've got the Toshiba E740. It has integrated 802.11b, and it's very thin - smaller than an IPaq without the sleeve. Don't know what you mean by "affortable", and I forget what I paid for it anyway. But, it's pretty cool. Battery life could be better - keeping the WiFi enabled all the time kills battery life.

I've got my eyes focused on the E740 and the H5540(? top iPaq) now. Built-in WLAN is of course good news. Need to see if I can afford them though...they are close to 1000 USD here

Expensive yes for a remote, but it's well worth it since I don't have to fire up the plasma or the projector to select a song. PPC/NetRemote/MediaJukebox is an impressive combo.

TorAtle - why would you pay such a premium over the Axim?

TorAtle

Because I wouldn't need a bulky CF card sticking out. Because I've already spent 8 times that amount on a plasma, and 4 times that on a projector. Plus a HTPC, audiogear etc etc.

er, wait..

Because I've a sucker for gadgets :D

I'm using an iPaq 5455. Small, very bright/crisp screen and built-in 802.11 and bluetooth; nice not to need sleeve and CF Wifi card. Available at CompUSA for $650. Vastly cheaper than a color Pronto and a lot more capable.
