View Full Version : Best PPC for NetRemote?

Right now, I have a Toshiba e740. I love everything about it, other than that it doesn't always work. I've had continuous problems with it losing all installed applications when the battery gets low. I got a replacement unit quite a while ago, and it's still doing it. To be honest, I haven't put too much time into seeing if there's anything that can be done to fix it, but I have done some searching on usenet, and saw a lot of people complaining about the same things, with no sure fixes mentioned.
So, ..., I may be in the market for another PPC, and want to know what others are using. I'd like something as small as the Toshiba, with built-in WiFi. I'd also like long battery life, and a fairly bright screen.
Suggestions?

I'll check that out. Does it have built-in WiFi? What do you use the bluetooth for? ActiveSynch?

Cool. What kind of range do you get with the bluetooth?

If you want to have anything near the range needed outside one room or a small condo you'll have to go for something with built-in WLAN (since card models will require something that takes up a lot more room in your pocket). I'm very satisfied with my Ipaq 5450.

With my Bluetooth dongle I can get a realistic 60-75 feet from the pc.

Now that's bordering on impressive...if that is through a wall or three. But that's in open terrain, right?

My media pc is slap bang in the middle of the house. I can get access from all surrounding rooms on the same floor.

Pretty impressive! I only managed to get access within 30 feet in my house. Never more than one drywall. And going out to the patio or whatever you may call it was totally out of the question. Maybe houses in Norway are made to withstand more cold than houses in the Lonestar state? Ahhh, that reminds me of Lonestar beer! And the HEB brand of cream soda. It's been four years since my last trip, I think I need to start saving money and take another - but of course most of my spare money these days goes into the AV systems and gadgets for NetRemote...

Your welcome over anytime.
I have been living here for around 8 years, I am originally from England, so I also miss some of my creature comforts.

I've got the Toshiba 755, and must say it is pretty impressive. Built in wi-fi works really well. I have it set so it never turns off (I leave it in the cradle to recharged when I'm not using it) and it is always on and always connected.
From what I've read, it is an improvement over the 740s, and I got it at Amazon at a good price with a $50 merchandise certificate.

Ken:
Have you ever left it out of the cradle long enought for the batteries to drain down? With my 740, when the batteries fully drain, it often loses its memory. This was supposedly fixed in the earlier models. I had one of the earlier models, and got a replacement when Toshiba did a recall, and it still does it. I've heard rumors that the newer ones do it, too.

rocinante2003, is it the cold, damp weather or the grumpy mentality with the stiff upper lip you miss? The only thing I can think of that I would miss if I moved from the UK to Texas would be haggis and dark ale... 8)

LOL

I hear you on that, and no way, no way indeed do I miss that. :)
I miss........ English chocolate, Chips (fries), and Curry LOL. The weather, that stupid stiff upper lip, and that grumpy mentality can stay put, I dont miss that for one second. In fact, thats one reason I love this country so much, you can talk to someone while waiting in line without them looking at you like you just escaped from the local hospital.
Then again, the many days that the temp stay over 100f, I sure miss those darn clouds and rain. LOL
Any chance anyone from the UK wanna Fed ex me some Fish n' Chips lol.

Dave T,
I use a Tosh e740, and I haven't had one problem with it. I have let the battery get below 20% and it hasn't lost my data. I do use a CF memory card to take backups on aregular basis, so that if I did lose my installed programes, it should hurt too much.
Would you consider trying a third?
Cheers

Have you ever let the power drain all the way down to 0? If I'm diligent enough to put it back on the cradle when not in use, then I'm ok. This wasn't true with the original - it would lose its memory when I looked at it sideways. With this one, though, I will still put it down for a week or so (not in the cradle), and it will lose its charge completely. I do have the WiFi switch enabled all the time. I forget the details, but I've had problems when I turn off the WiFi.

I read some information that because the iPaq is only class 2 or 3 it would not increase the range using a class 1 PC adapter. BIG LIE!! I first bought a class 3 (i think, may have been class2) and range was horrible! I could not even go behind a wall then I bought a class 1 adapter and the range is as good as my 802.11b (laptop) or better! I still cannot believe I have good single anywhere in my house (4-level - HT in basement). My only complaint it that NR does not have a way to make the conneciton. Sometimes the connection will drop (normally connected 24/7) and I have to close NR and restart the connection from the iPaq GUI which can be diffecult withour stylist.
