Thanks to all here for help on getting a SimPad SL4 to CE4 and netremote but I thought some may find a summary useful (may remove some of the hours it took me!)
Hope this helps...
1. Download serload.exe
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/simpad/serload.zip?download
2. Download the Englidsh HPC2000 Image and install (This stage is only necessary if you are converting a german language Simpad to English)
http://www.my-siemens.com/cgi-bin/mysiemens/simpadconfigurator/simpadupdate.cgi?devTyp=S842&serNo=S842-00000&swVarNow=S842-SI-INT-008&swVarReq=S842-SI-INT-008&usr=00000000&pwd=00000000&seek=0
3. Download CE4.0 for Simpad SLC (don't worry the SLC image works brilliantly and gives you a full english version of CE4.0)
http://www.my-siemens.com/cgi-bin/mysiemens/simpadconfigurator/simpadupdate.cgi?devTyp=S843&serNo=S843-00000&swVarNow=S843-SI-INT-104&swVarReq=S843-SI-INT-104&usr=00000000&pwd=00000000&seek=0
4. Download the DLLs needed to get Netremote to work in CE4 and unzip
http://www.silentservices.de/simpad/fakedlls-all.zip
nb. to install the image
a) copy serload.exe to a directory and the simpadupdate to a different directory (I suggest directories off the root with short directory names as you will need to access this directory in a dos shell).
b) open a dos shell and go to the directory you created and copied the files to
c) connect the Simpad using the serial cable
d) unload activesync on your PC (you may have to kill the service wsecomm
e) stop the Simpad tryinmg to connect to a PC (control panel > PC connections > uncheck the box
f) type serload simpadupdate
g) when prompted, reset the Simpad using the button on the underneath
h) be patient!
i) after approx 40 minutes serload will promt you to reset the Simpad again
j) should be updated to the new image
see http://www.silentservices.de/simpad/simpad-install-howto.txt for more help (theis website is a great help... after using the google translation page!)
5. Restart Activesync and enable PC connection on the Simpad - make sure you have a connection (you should see Mobile Device in windows explorer and be able to view its contents)
6. Copy AYGSHELL.DLL and DOCLIST.DLL (from the files contained in fakedlls-all.zip) to the Simpad \windows directory
7. Download the Pocket PC 2000 Netremote installer (v0.99) and use the default install directory on the Simpad
8. Copy MFCCE300.DLL (from the files contained in fakedlls-all.zip) to the Simpad \program files\netremote directory
9. Run Netremote and configure the connection, close netremote
10. Download http://www.netremote.org/dl/NetRemote-15-Sep-2003.zip (kindly created by the BOSS!) and copy the netremote.exe to the Simpad \My Documents\NRCCF directory
11. Download the mc_800x600_2.ccf CCF from the netremote.org donload section and copy it mc_800x600_2.ccf
12. Run NetRemote - hopefully smile
13. have a beer and prepare to do battle with your Simpad / Wireless card!!!
Hope this helps - by all means ask any questions and I'll see if I can bodge an answer. If anyone needs any of the files mentioned - let me know and I can send them over
I got a Netgear MA401 802.11b card to work quite easily after trying 4 others - when I have recovered I'll write up some notes which may or may not help
