Strategies for picking files

Are most people picking files using playlists? For instance, if I use Girder to load up winamp, it loads with the last file loaded (or playlist or whatnot). Are poeple programming in a method to load files, then moving around in subdirectories, or is the playlist method most common?

I guess I'm just kinda curious to see if anyones come up with a clever solution for picking media files up for playing
