The reason it says ATX is a requirement is that only ATX systems have that on-motherboard power connector. AT systems are controlled via a toggle. You're correct that it is RF though. The infrared is apparently just a mistake. I haven't seen too many IR antennas

In this thread http://www.girder.nl/phpBB/viewtopic.php?mode=viewtopic&topic=409&forum=3&start=60 people are modifying the original UIRT to also power on  It's a long and not finished story however.

Obviously Girder can't be used to turn on a turned off computer (since Girder isn't running yet), but is there any remote control device that will power on a computer?

Seems the power button just sends an electric impulse to the mobo to tell it to turn on. That should be remotable.

This is not a request regarding standby or hibernation but an actual turn on from a cold, off computer.

RJNFC:

I looked at your link but am confused. They call it infrared, but the picture and specs seem to indicate RF. I e-mailed them this question.

Also, I'm thinking that this device would be simpler than that one. I don't understand why you would need ATX power connectors when it only has to affect the power ON pins on the mobo, just like the power button does. You would also need an IR receiver box or at least the opportunity to tie in to an IR receiver, ie, Irman.

Does anyone have this device and would like to offer insight or are there any other alternatives.

They never answered my e-mail. I guess if they don't care enough to do that (even though their website actually states 'response within 24 hours'), I don't put much faith in their ability to reliably complete a transaction. On to the next option.

What about the "wake-on lan" feature.

By using Girder TCP/IP Server and sending a command from a second PC or other device (Palm, Audrey, etc) this should bring the PC back to life.

There is a simple way to do this if you have some extra dough. It's not unlike the keychains used in cars. I'm thinking of getting one after I get my X10. Here's where you can buy em:
