Just wondering how many Girder users would be interested in a natural language processor with the ability to execute lua scripts to communicate with Girder, if one existed? Would any of you purchase it to use with Girder and your favourite voice recognition system for a nominal fee? The reason I'm asking is because I found this nice program at www.verbot.com and I am trying to convince the makers to make it more Girder-friendly, and implement SAPI 5 compatibility. If you find this prospect interesting, please voice your opinion here and consider checking out the site. Thanks!

I can't believe that no one is interested in this possibility! I mean, I know that Girder is primarily for remotes, but imagine commanding your HTPC to turn on the television, and it asks you what channel you would like to watch and if it should dim the lights. Using an open mic or a chorless clip-on mic you could be in complete command of everything that you have automated! Please, guys, help me make it happen!

This reminds me of that time a mate was showing off his new cell phone that had voice recognition. He stood there for about 5 minutes trying to dial home by saying 'home' in every accent you could possibly imagine.
Home
Hoaaaaaammme
Howwwwmmmmm
We were all looking at the cell phone screen in anticipation waiting for it to say ...Calling Home.... but nothing happened. Then at last we got something and my mate was feeling really proud. At least he was until he looked at the screen and it read ...Calling Dave. I never laughed so much in all my life. It was especially funny as Dave was one of the guys stood around watching it all :D

lol. Well, that sounds like a lot of stories I have heard about hardware with embedded (I think that's the right term) voic recognition. You can use any voice recognition program with Verbot, and with the right amount of training, I know that Dragon Naturally Speaking is almost flawless.

actually, my cell phone is quite good... though me and my cousins have this game where you create a voice tag, and everyone else has like 3 tries to get the phone to recognize that tag (you gotta try and replicate the original voice).
but seriously... especially if you are careful with your commands to not sound too close to each other, it'd be a great tool..
but i have not enough need for it to pay money.
though if you could get some voices like the AT&T true voice ones, for FREE, that'd be nice. they sound 500 times better than MS sam

I paid for my AT&T Natural Voices, and plan on getting more. Maybe a woman with a british accent would be nice. I don't need the program, but it would be great to attach girder events to every command and then jump to those commands using voice commands that are intiuitively worded. I plan on getting a small wireless mic and setting it up to have certain routines as well that will welcome me home when I get in, and then ask me if I would like to watch TV, or if the lights need adjustment, etc. just for fun. I'll also be able to command it by barking orders at it in any combination of words that I specify. Ie.- Turn off the &%$#in lights! or Lights off, please!

yeah, i didn't mean getting a cracked copy... i meant like a free (like MS sam voice) but att quality :P
as for a wireless mic, for like $40 you can get one of those throat vibration mics that is cordless. it's what i plan to get for me when i'm gaming, and i would say all around what you'd want for your application. also not so "out there" when you aren't just by yourself, fairly inconspicuous.
just google search for wireless vibration mic for PC or somethin like that.

Well, I did extensive searching and could not find a better speech engine. I gave up looking for a free one that is acceptable. Finally caved and bought a www.nextup.com program JUST to get the AT&T voices without having to donate an organ.
Thanks for the tip on the mic. Sounds cool, but if they are wireless, they must be kinda bulky, unless they are bluetooth, no? I'll check it out.

that there is the link to the wireless mic for like $35.99 (was $39.99 a few months ago i think). i can't tell you how good it is, i think this picture at the ebay link is the only one i've ever seen.... but for $40, it's worth a try.

Thanks for the link! I will most likely order one in the next couple of weeks. I'll let you know if they work well, and how the battery life is.

I ordered one of those mics today. I really hope that they are OK for voice recognition. "Project SYNTHia" takes another step in the right direction. :D
