Hi !
I'm new to this topic, so i would be glad if anyone could help me.

I own a toshiba laptop with ir/da port and i want to use it directly as a programmable remote for my dvd-player.

1) Will it work with Girder?
2) Do I need a special driver for the ir port to work with girder ?
3) Do I need special plug-ins to let the system work under Win XP as a remote ?

I searched the database but i only could find something about PDA's.
Thank you very much for your hints.

Hi,

Would a laptop not be a bit big as a remote!

Anyway,

1.) Yes
2.) I do not think you will be able to get girder to work with the IRDA port.
3.) Do not understand, please explain!

I would buy a PDA if I were you and use Netremote...

Thank you for the answer and excuse me for my horrible english...lol:

I know there is a way to configure a PDA as a remote.
But why should i buy a PDA when i still own a laptop and maybe it's also possible to use it as a remote ?

Generally, I don't need a programmalble remote, but i want to switch my DVD to codefree, that's why I ask.

Thank you :

Do you want to control a software dvd player or hardware?

If hardware, then you will need to add an IR emitter to your laptop or go wireless and run netremote on the laptop with some other hardware like the global cache device...

Thank you, Mike.

I want to control a hardware DVD-player and my laptop still contains an IRDA port.
Will Girder probably be able to 'find' the built-in port ?

Girder will not be able to use the IRDA port to send. Its really meant for data and not consumer IR. NetRemote uses the IRDA port on PDA's and this does work depending on the PDA. ie. Some work good others not at all. NetRemote doesn't use a laptops IRDA port.

If you have a PC close to your DVD Player you could do this using a device like the usb uirt and NetRemote. But this is more complex and I would go the PDA route.
