Scientific Atlantic Explorer 3200

I noticed I can plug a keyboard into my Scientific Atlantic Explorer 3200 stb to change channels. Just punch in a channel number and hit enter and the channel changes, use the up and down arrows and the mini bottom guide displays.

I was wondering if there is a way to plug the usb port to my HTPC and somehow get sageTV or some other program to change the channels on the stb? Thus saving me purchasing an external IR device.

No, I don't think this would work :(

Any reason why? There isn't a way to make the PC emulate a keyboard and send keyboard commands through the USB port.
