If you already have an old IR-based remote control, all you really need is an IR receiver. There are a lot of them out there, from home-brew to very exotic. One is the IRMan (http://www.evation.com/irman/index.html) from Evation. If you search this site or visit the download page you should see references to more.

I'm turning an old computer into a hometheater PC and need a remote that will control only a few programs, mainly PowerDVD or WinDVD and MusicMatch or Winamp.

I just want a cheap solution, and I've seen the Logitech/AST remote, as well as the packard bell remote. Any clues as to which works the best. Is it possible to configure the remote that came with my directTV receiver to use Girder?

I'm assuming that the Girder software works with any of these remotes and software. I'm new to all this and any help is greatly appreciated.
