Ok, to be quite honest I'm confused about all these HTPC front ends... I've read a lot about NetRemote but I'm not sure it can solve my problem. I want to get started building my setup but I'm not sure if NetRemote is the best / right choice. Hopefully someone here can help.
I've got a Lilliput 7 inch touch screen panel and I want it mounted in the kitchen. I would like to have the ability for this touch screen to control an mp3 jukebox & TV (separate from living room big screen tv). Any other items like checking the web, weather, caller id, or webcams would be a bonus.
Would NetRemote give me the ability to select from my mp3 collection and watch TV from the touch screen?
Thanks

Yes, You would need an IR transmitter in the room. were the tv was.
How are your mp3's stored?

Or an IR sender in another room and IR extenders, wired or wireless. Look at my system, I'm doing that (and a lot more...) with NetRemote.

:D
So how does it work? Netremote doesn't come with a tv app. Would I use a third party tv app then select a "watch tv" button from netremote which would launch that third party program over netremote? After watching tv how would I exit the tv app to get back to netremote? Remember I want this all to happen on the touch screen lcd.
btw - all my mp3's are stored on my HD I play them via slim server now.

Well you lost me as to what you want to do. DO you want NR to control your TV or are you talking about streaming TV to your touchpad?

NetRemote will allow you to remotely control just about anything. It is not a front end for watching TV but it can be front end for controlling a TV. So, like JW says, tell us more specifically what it is you want to do.
On the MP3 subject, NR supports remote control of J.River Media Center, Windows Media Player and will shortly support iTunes. The best support by far is for JRMC. So if your MP3's are on a PC in your house that your device can connect to NR will allow you to browse the library, select tracks and a whole lot more. If your PC outputs the sound to an amplifier NR can control that too either via direct IR (if your device running NR supports it) or with some other software / hardware connected to your main PC.
Tell us what you want to control (e.g. TV / AMP etc) and whether it's in the same room as your PC.

Sorry if I've been so confusing....Let me try to explain it again.
I have an 7 inch LCD screen I want this screen to be mounted in the kitchen (which is far away from my living room). I want to run NR on my LCD touch screen and when I select the option to "watch tv" I want the TV output to display on that same LCD screen.
Can NR do that (with the help of third party software like beyond tv or sage tv)? I don't know whether NR will allow another app to "take over" the same screen its running on. Then when I'm done watching tv I want NR to re-display itself on the LCD.

Well, if that's what you mean, NetRemote will allow you to run any program on the computer (or any URL, for that matter) from a button, and when you close the TV app you will be back to NetRemote again. But this applies to local programs, so if you haven't got a regular Win32 computer with a TV card connected to that one 7", I don't think it's possible.

Hmmm.....
Thanks for the replay Mastiff. Would you recommend a setup like this? Or do you think it would be better if I purchased a separate TV for the kitchen connected it to my Directv reciever and ONLY used the touch screen as a giant remote? I don't want to try anything complicated I want the least amount of headaches possible.
Thanks

I would actually prefer that last version, prehaps with a 45 inch plasma? But seriously it's not a headache at all, but the signal can be a problem. A TV will normally have better antenna reception than a computer. Which is why I have a composite cable to the PC with a 19" LCD monitor on my kitchen...
