Just announced: Niveus Pocket Remote, two-way control over your Windows Media Center Edition with a PPC.

http://store.niveusmedia.com/s.nl/sc.2/category.2/it.I/id.5/.f

I'd much rather use NR when it's extended with a MCE plugin than to purchase Niveus, as I'd want to control Girder (and perhaps even JRMC) when I switch over to MCE.

One can only hope...

Good news, Ben & Mike!

I'm in no big rush, as MCE currently does not support DVB-S natively (only thru an external tuner) and I would still like to do some testing on Girder and JRMC integration with MCE. However, when NR supports it fully, I'll move ahead - especially the HP Z550 series looks sweet, hope they'll be released in EU soon!

BTW, Philips just announced a (simple) bi-directional remote for MCE as well: http://www.ehomeupgrade.com/entry/513/philips_media_center
and a more capable device as well:
http://www.ehomeupgrade.com/entry/512/philips_rc9800i_wireless
but no mention there of MCE (seems to be based on proprietary PC-based software and uPnP)

Hope to hear more soon!

Now that the Niveus product is avaiable, I was wondering if there is any progress to share on NR & MCE integration. Perhaps this could be interesting as well: MCE controller, which

"To put it simply, MCE Controller, allows you to simulate a press of any button on the MCE IR remote control by sending a text command to a TCP/IP port on the MCE machine. For example if MCE Controller receives the string “mypictures” it will tell Media Center to go to the “My Pictures” page."

See http://kindel.com/blogs/charlie/archive/2005/02/26/1436.aspx

Sounds like MCE integration gets easier, right? And Girder integration should be easier too.

Thanks for the link, Jeroen.

I had done some prototyping of a plugin into MCE along with a NetRemote plugin to do this, and have jumping between pages working, but it looks like having a plugin talk to this thing will be much more efficient.

The generic plugin is no longer included with NetRemote Pro, but I think you could use it to talk to this until we make a plugin available to talk to this.

I hope you can succeed in making a plugin this way. I suggest checking out the Niveus product as well, you can download and try it for free (haven't tested it myself, I don't like the way the buttons look etc but that's a matter of taste of course).

I'm not in a hurry to switch (still waiting for better support for digital TV by satellite), but if NR is supporting it properly, I may just go ahead.

Hi

Have downloaded this program and tested it, first of all I though the setup was simple enough as well as the layout certainly works excellent as a remote control for mce and would suit anyone who has mce and wants a wirless remote (providing they have ppc)

What I did not like was the fact that when you want to change a track it jumps through the my music procedure as if it was going through a series of shortcuts thats fine if you dont have the picture displayed but very annoying if you do also the feed back does not give you complete track info like how long left it purley gives you lenght of song and album cover if available, I for one will be stick with netremote and hope they include something similar but better.

cheers for the post it always good to see other developers attempting because it only makes the guys/gals and promixis even better

Hi guys,
Here is a pretty simple plugin to talk to the "MCE Controller" from Charlie Kendel, Jr.

There is a Win32 and PPC version, and a (very simple) ccf showing the one command. Basically use IR code -15,1,1 and enter the command (http://www.kindel.com/products/mcecontroller/1.0.4/Readme.htm#Included_Commands) in the IR code.

Pretty neat.

One caveat, and I've already fired an email off to Charlie about this - his controller is not multithreaded, so only one NetRemote client can control it at a time.

I do wish you'd stop doing that Ben!

Do you mean in the IR name?

Ben, great stuff! Being able to seamlessly integrate existing NR CCF's with MCE specific commands will rock! I'm not sure when I have time to test it (don't have MCE yet myself), but I hope soon - I'll let you know how it works out for me.

Yes, sorry about that.

Jeroen - great! It's working great for me here, so let me know.

Hi,

I have downloaded WXPMCE.zip to try, but I don't know how to make it work. For testing, I would like to test using NetRemote Client on my computer rather than PPC.

So I have launched MCE Controller, chosen the simple CCF file from WXPMCE.zip, but no reaction

Where should I put the dll?

thanks for your cooperation

Hi ifreeman -
Drop the dll in the C:\Program Files\NetRemote\Plugin directory, and then restart NetRemote.

You'll probably have to go into File\Properties, choose the plugin tab, and then make sure the plugin is configured for the right user and port.

Thanks for bumping this post, I've just relooked at Charlies project and he's opensourced it, so perhaps I'll add the missing features we need and move forward with this.
