Remote: Any remote you like. I, for instance HATE touchscreens, so I got one (and tomorrow I will get my second) Marants RC2000, while many others like the Pronto and RC5000 (same remote, different packaging) and other touchscreens. If you have no need for the advanced functions of these remotes, a simple One for all or Radio Shack remote will do. My son (six years old) controls the home theater with a ten button remote of which he uses six: play, pause, next, previous, lights on (via HomeSeer and X-10)and off (ejects the disc and turns off the Zoom Player). The only other thing he uses is a macro on my RC2000 that turns on the proj, the receiver and the HTPC.
Receiver: The cheapest way is to build your own Universal receiver, but the easiest way for people with about 13 thumbs (like me) is the IRMan from wwww.evation.com. It's supported by a plugin and works like a charm out of the box.
