On the nrdemo.ccf there's a semi-transparent icon in a frame with controls. I would like to create a black, semi-transparent one for my own controls in an 800x600 CCF, but how do I do it? I've got Photoshop.

Here is a great tutorial for making transparent buttons. There are many on the web. In fact the best info in on the web. I bought a few books and they don't come close to what you can find out on the internet.

Thanks! But where do I start? I only want to make a 440x440 flat black field that shows what's under in the CCF. I'm not really clear as to what steps in that guide will give me that.

These instructions are for Photoshop CS but should work fine for earlier versions.

Make sure the background colour is set to black

Create a new image 440x440, with the background contents set to Background color.

On the layers palette, double click on the name 'Background' - a dialog should appear giving the name Layer 0. Okay this. The background is now editable. If double clicking doesn't work, right click and pick 'Layer Properties'.

Again on the layers palette, adjust the opacity to say 70%

File|Save for Web and save it as a PNG-24, making sure that the Transparency check box is checked.
