Forgive my ignorance as I am a newbie. I would like to know how the Netreote can control my HTPC via a wireless network? Is it using some sort of VNC type program like winvnc?

Secondly, can netremote work with Windows Media Center but not running Girder?

    Thanks for your time

NetRemote can control your HTPC via a TCP/IP protocol. It is not a VNC like program. It can control MCE without Girder.

Is Dell X50V not recommended for NetRemote? I am not sure what the difference is. Even the shop that sells X51v have X50v on picture for some reason:

Yes, we have both in our lab, and both work fine.

    Default Update?

This thread is kind of old - is the Dell X51v still the recommended VGA PPC? I'm looking for the best one available (most portable, longest battery life) that works well with NetRemote. I want WM5, to get the persistence if the battery dies - I've found that non WM5 PPC's are too much of a hassle having to restore if your battery dies.

And, I'm concerned about the WM5 problems discussed here: http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/...16/552996.aspx.

So, what's the currently recommended "best" VGA PPC?

    Thanks!

    - Dave

The x51v is still the recommended VGA PPC, from a price/performance ratio. I don't think the Dell units have been toppled yet.

And as far as I know none have exploded.

I am assuming that the X51V is still the recommended PPC, but I was hoping to get a list of some alternatives that I might be able to find on EBAY.

Could you please provide some alternatives to the X51V and X5? I see a lot of IPAQs, but I am not sure if they are any good for NetRemote or if which models I should look for. What other brands have you had success with.

In my case, I only want to use it as a NetRemote and will use Wireless to communicate with my HTPC.

Any PPC with Wireless will work well. The Axim has always been good from a price/performance standpoint, and the IR seems to work best. If you don't care about IR, any PPC's should work well.

Just wanted to add that one of the best rated PPC's for value, the Acer n321 (latest version of n311), works fine and it only cost me £207 including delivery. It doesn't have IR but I have girder on my PC plus a usb-uirt so any IR is handled that way.

Got to admit that this is my first PPC so I can't compare it to any others (I used to be a Palm supporter) but I was going to only use this PPC for NetRemote anyway... unfortunately the darn thing is loads better than my last Palm and my Palm is now in the unused box.

Seems like Dell models X51 and X51v are discontinued. I can't find them on Dell page. Is there any other PDA that will become King of NetRemote?
