Honestly I think there is a cable problem. Especially since 510 is giving you these errors and the serial log shows that the com port (before it reaches my code) is actually receiving those errant bytes.

Could be I guess, but I think it's that the Meridian probably doesn't do any handshaking.
Anyway it seesm that the string.len > 0 fixes it but it doesn't give me great confidence that it's fixed forever.
Is there anything we can do/code for equipment that doesn't do hardware or software handshaking?

Almost all AV equipment uses no flow control.
I suspect that Ron is right about the cable - is the cable pushed well home at both ends and secured with screws?

Just to close this chapter (at this stage)
Using 514 with the same cables I am no longer gettiong the serial lockups.
I did check the cables prior to moving house, but since the move and with the upgrade to 514 all seems to be OK at the moment.
Will report back if I get troubles again.
