IrCC SMC driver
I have SMC IrCC on my Dell Latitue. I've been trying to run Girder on it as the specs show it also supports direct tx/rx. However, Girder asks for com port and Win2k doesn't map any port for it. Can anyone help?

I also have the SMC IrCC - Fast Infrared Port on my laptop, and I would also like to get it configured with Girder. Does Girder need a plugin to be able to get input commands from the SMC IrCC?

Sounds like it is probably IRDA and not consumer IR.
IRDA is not supported by most consumer IR remotes. Different frequency and protocol.
I suspect that you are out of luck as Girder does not have IRDA support.

I'm more or less a newbie here... what's the difference between IRDA and consumer IR?

Irda is primarily used for pda, cellphone, printer, laptop (and the like) bidirectional communications emulating a serial port over a short range (1m to 2m) infrared carrier.
A consumer remote control uses a unidirectional burst frequency/protocol that is unqiue for each key to send a command over a longer distance to control audio video consumer electronics like tv, stereo, cd and dvd players.
