Default UIRT2 from LUC - Device hangs after a view events / Win98/SE

    Hi,

yesterday I recieved two assembled UIRT2 direct from Luc. I've tested them on my System (PIII 866 - Win98SE) with Girder 3.2.4 and the new plugin for the UIRT.

At first sight all work well - but after a view repetitions of an IR-Command the device hangs. Only when deactivating and reactivating the device will work againg - but only for a view events again. What's the problem here???

BTW - both UIRTs behave the same way

Under WinXP it seems to be no problem - but my HTPC works still under Win98 - so what's the solution ???

    Greetings,
    Guido

    ... I forgot the following:

When playing with the timings and the other options the effect is the same - only the time to the 'hanging' differs.

    Sorry for the straggler here.

    Greetings

This problem is probably caused by the ICSP components, could you try with a cable wich only connects TXD, RXD and GND.
I'm quite sure this will solve it.

    Hi Luc,

I have bad news - it doesn't solve the problem. I connect only the pins 5=GND 2=RXD and 3=TXD with the result, that the device isn't activatable anymore.

What's exactly the problem here - are the UIRT2 not suitable for my mainboard ???

    Any suggestions ???

    Regards

    Ok - my fault ops:

If I connect only with GND/TXD/RXD I have to use external power supply logical.

    Now all works well

    Thanks !!!

I never tried to use the uirt2 without the 5V supply.
You are saying it works but with some problems, somebody else said the same a while ago but I assumed this was a typo.

Looks like the ICSP components provide enough power for the PIC to run albeit not reliable.

The uirt2 requires a 5V supply for good operation.

I tested the UIRT with 3 Mainbords and 3 Operating Systems. Under 2 of them, the UIR works without external 5V supply but with full serial connection.

On the third board it works never with full serial connection, no matter if external power supply was connected or not. But with 3 wire serial connection it works without any problem - at least if the external power supply is connected.

I think transmitting is another story.

    Which problem do you mean?

The UIRT2 requires 5V for proper operation, if you only connect the serial cable it can't work reliable.

There is a firmware problem wich can create problems depending on the PC and the OS installed, this is solved by using a 3 wire cable for the serial connection.

    I have the same problem!

I have an external Power Supply and a full 1:1 Cable but only 3 wires are conected (RX/TX/GND)

Sometimes Enabling works, sometimes it says "cannot send I" and when it works, just a view seconds and it hangs.

If I take a shorter Cable it works!! But the longer one (I need it!) is about 5 meter - this is not too long, is it??

    thanks for help,
    unimatrix
