Default A small tip re copying ccf to PPC.

OK - so maybe everyone knew this but me! I don't care if I make a fool of myself so I'll share it on the forum just in case it's actually useful to anyone:-

When it comes to copying my ccf to my PPC I always used to start active sync and copy the file using from my PC. I did not realise that it's in fact easier to simply copy it by just using the PPC and without needed to start active sync (well it is on an iPAQ 4150 with PPC2003). Here's how to set it up (worded as if you are totally stupid like me!) :

    On your PC (once only)
    - set the directory of your ccf to be shared on the Network (this is right click properties> sharing> share this folder on the network)

    On your PPC
    - open file explorer
    - tap the little hand symbol at the bottom of the screen
    - in the open path dialog type the computer name or IP of your PC
    - All directories set up as network shares on your PC are shown
    - Tap and hold the directory that contains your ccf (not the ccf itself just yet) and select Copy
    - Press the Mobile Device symbol at the bottom of the screen
    - navigate into the My Documents\NRCCF directory
    - tap and hold and Paste shortcut
    - Now you have a permanent shortcut so you can quickly navigate to your ccf and copy it to the PPC

    JLee,

I appreciate your social competence. Indeed I did not know this way of sharing folders, thanks.

Can't you just simply keep ONE copy of the CCF on your home network, and share the folder it's stored in? Then all systems can access CCF stored there. Can the PPC use that CCF?

Like having a central repository for all your NetRemote files. That saves you the trouble of copying it everywhere once you make a change. You just "tell" the other systems/ppc's where to load the CCF from on the network. If you use the same name and location everytime, then NetRemote will automatically have your latest CCF next time it restarts. This is what I do on my own home network. All my pc's "share" the same CCF from the same location, or they did, or that's what I want... I can't remember.... hmmmm I must be getting old.

The CCF's files are generally small enough to share on a home network quickly...

on the PPC may be different, though. I think I remember reading something about a registry change or something. Might want to ask Ben if this is do-able on a PPC. I would test but I have completely re-done all my setup and everything is not working... and my PPC has just been a paper weight lately!!

OK - I briefly tried this network CCF idea. It works fine for all PC's on the network, but NR on the PPC doesn't work, as it seems that in NR you can choose any directory where to get the CCF, but NR doesn't give the option to go over the network.

Any plans for that, BEN? It would be nice for those of us that have TOO many computers, to just access one CCF on the network.

ALso - is there any way to get NR to "refresh" when reloading a changed CCF? It seems that NR hold the CCF in cache or something, because as I make changes I close NR and reopen, but it gets the "old" copy... even though I replaced it.

This never happens to me and I do it all the time. Are you sure you are not getting caught out by the Tonto bug i.e. you click Save rather than rely on the 'Do you want to save changes...' message?

Are you sure you are actually closing NR via a button in your ccf rather than via the OK button that is part of the PPC Operating System. OK will not close NR but will keep it running in RAM.

    Dennis,

I think this is not an option. The mobile Windows is not able to "mount" a network share. There is a freeware utility that does this called "netuse", but this slows down the PPC significantly, because every time any application is opening a file requester, the whole directory tree is scanned. This results in a poor performance and even worse, when the resource is missing. Then you have to wait forever.
I suggest you copy your ccf into the MyDocuments-Folder on your desktop. Every time you synchronize, the PPC gets updated automatically and this can also be done over the network.

And besides you'll get a missing CCF file complaint every time you forget to wait until the WLAN is connected before you start NetRemote.

    Thanks guys!

    wilhelm and others:

I have found a free utility that I use instead of the normal file explorer... It's called Total Commander CE v1.21 - www.ghisler.com is in the ABOUT dialog...

I just click in the "path" area and type \\machinename\c$

that worked - even asked me for the login and password - which i typed and that got me in... i could navigate around with pretty good ease... HOWEVER, I tried to copy the CCF over and it gave some sort of permission error... and I trouble shooted that for a while, without luck... So i was close.

I said all this, so that you would know about Total Commander. It didn't slow anything down on the PPC that i could tell.

MASTIFF: Takk skal du ha! Thank you for that tip - that is a VERY good point - my PPC will be primarily my remote, so it will get it's own copy... I will just use that shared idea for the other PC's in the house.

GEEEEZ - I clicked the www.ghisler.com and I got a VERY old copy of that Total Commander - I wonder where the heck I found it!!??!!

Looks like the latest version is 6.03a - it's shareware... and the Pocket version if FREEWARE... ahhhh ha! Which IS INDEED V1.21...

OK - not so old after all... course it was released about a year ago.

    Dennis,

yeah, I know this app, but what you describe is just the same you can do with Explorer by clicking on the rightmost icon in the menue bar. So what?
If you want a permanent connection you have to use other software.
The only thing that PPC allows is the "mounting" of the network path in the folder "network". This is a permanent connection and leads to the problems I described.
    Just to clarify...
