View Full Version : Still having regular NR crashes w/ G4

I can't find my original thread on this, but just wanted to pipe up that my NR2.0 crashes multiple times throughout the day if G4 is running.
The error is 'netremote.exe' -

This is what MB logs right before the error / crash (does this on my tablet, my laptop, and the NR client running local on the MB server).

0506 20:05:25.0436 MediaBridge: Received command : KAR from 192.168.1.13:3890

Girder does not log any errors
This usually happens when the clients are sitting idle, but can happen any time
This does not usually happen on all NR clients at once, but sometimes it does.
Running latest NR beta and Girder 4 beta

Is there just one copy of G4 running or multiple copies?

How big is the lua.txt file in the NR directory when this happens? On the PPC do you have a NetRemote.log file in the Program Files\NetRemote directory after such a crash?

Is G4 sending any data to NR periodically?

I just started NR this morning on my laptop while NRD was loading and NR immediately gave me the finger, popped up the 'netremote.exe' error.

-I'm only running one copy of G4, latest beta

-Lua.txt is 129 bytes and contains:
Loading GAC.lua
Loaded GAC.lua
Loading GirderReady.lua
Loaded GirderReady.lua
Loading PanelWatch.lua
Loaded PanelWatch.lua

-I'm only running NR on Win32 platform (XP Pro), my install path is \program files\promixis\netremote. There is no Netremote.log file present.

-I don't readily see anything logged in G4 that preceeds the crash. The only regular data from G4 to NR is the weather update, unless there are behind-the-scenes things going on that I don't know about.

I decided to remove one instance of MB from my laptop NR client. As soon as I deleted the instance I got the NR error again- and this is what MB logged:

now this is even wierder... I went to re-launch my laptop NR after the above posted crash, and on launch NR crashed again. This is what MB logged- note that there are some MB / GAC functions listed, but I have not physically executed any GAC actions from NR on either my laptop (.10 IP) or my tablet pc (.13 IP).

ok- don't know if this helps , I can reproduce the crash on demand now. If I go to NR properties and remove an instance of NR, it kicks off the crash / netremote.exe error.

Sure- I decided to go into NR on my laptop and change the MediaBridge plugin instances to use IP instead of computer name.

I had three instances of MB running (I thought maybe this might help w/ performance on album listings, etc...)

So, I went into 'File > Properites > Plugins' and selected the 3rd instance of MB. Hit 'remove'. NR crashed with the netremote.exe error, and the text I previously posted was logged by MB.
This same thing occurred for each instance of MB that I removed.
I did not have any problems adding a new instance of MB. i'm only running one instance now.

Does that help explain it? Hopefully it will reproduce for you- i'm running newest NR 2, MB and G4 betas.

This only happens if G4 is running. If G4 is shut down, I do not have any NR crashes. I have G4 set to accept connections from NR clients.

I don't know if this will help with the 'random' NR crashes... Since they usually happen while NR and the rest of my system are stitting idle.

I also have similar crashing problems with G4. I think i managed to avoid it crashing less by not making G4 start with computer. If i start it manually after my computer boot up then its fine.

Do you notice a difference when you do that?

kurt - Are you saying that you can make changes to MediaBridge plugins -except- when Girder 4 is running?

Ben- Yes, the only times I seem to have the crashes is when G4 is running.
If I leave G4 shut down I do not experience the netremote.exe error

just had another NR crash this morning on my Win32 XP tablet- Oddly, I'm seeing a definite pattern develop. I go to bed and when I get up in the morning at least one of my NR clients has crashed.

This morning, I closed the error and netremote, and restarted it on the Tablet.

I then tried to expand the 'Radio' list in the Tree. NR hung at 'Loading...'

I waited for a while to see if NR would load the Radio list, still sitting at 'Loading...'

Went to the server, looked at MB- The icon on the tray was yellow and opening the MB window it showed two connections from my tablet NR client. Not 'handling request' or anything, it just showed as normal.

I went into the properties of MB and unchecked / re-checked a settings box so MB would do a 'refresh' when I hit OK to exit the proerties screen.
MB refreshed itself and re-connected the tablet client. Now the client worked, and the Radio list loaded.

Attached file is what MB logged from the time of the crash and my re-load of NR this morning, to the time that I tinkered with MB and fixed it. You can see where I clicked 'Radio' in NR and then just let it sit...

[edit] uploaded MB log...

BTW does it matter which page is visible when the crash occurs?

Hi Rob- No, it does not seem to matter which page is visible but I'm pretty much always either on the Home, Now Playing or Tree View page-

-emailing you my NR ccf and lua, also my two G4 gml files. everything else in my setup is 'stock'. This problem was happening before I set up gml files in G4, so they are probably not related.

I had to kill MB and relaunch it to get it to work again- it was stuck at receiving / logging commands from NR but the tray icon stayed solid yellow and the commands were not passed through to MC

This sounds related to the other problem you posted about.
The good news is that Rob and I did some good work at finding 2 pretty big threading issues with NR 2 today which could potentially fix the problem you're having with G4.

I had quite a few NR crashes today- this was very uncommon to have so many in one day.

The log from MB is attached. each error precedes a crash in neteremote.exe.
The only things different today is that my DSL was down. this is when the crashes became more frequent. The only thing going on in G4 was regular attempts to update the weather maps to NR. other than that my sytem was idle, not doing anything.

i'm thinking the crashes are due to something being pushed to NR from girder- could it be the weather update?

wtf
May 14th, 2006, 10:09 AM
FYI: I don't know if it's related, but NR definitely will crash when an internet connection times out (try getting weather info while a download is in progress over a phoneline). The only other way I can get it to die consistently is to restart the computer that MB/JRMC is running on.

May 14th, 2006, 01:10 PM
wtf- very interesting. my problem sounds related. we're constantly downloading here over our dsl, so perhaps that could be a contributing cause for the regular crashes.

Ok, so I guess i'll have to go buy a cisco router and switch, and set up QOS / packet prioritization for Girder... lol

I've never explicitly reported this as there are enough others reporting a "me too" problem. But - what the heck - me too :-)

I am waiting for the next NR2 in the hope that the already identified Girder feedback threading issues are at the root of my Pocket PC lock-ups every day or so. I *do* make extensive use of Girder (G4) feedback. This hang occurs intermittently when resuming from sleep. It is entirely unpredictable and not frequent enough to stop me using NR2.

But it's not really robust enough. It's much less reliable that my old NR1.1+G3 combination. And it's not good for the WAF.

Ben- Unfortunately I'm still having the same crash. logs attached

I upgraded all of my NR clients to the new version and upgraded MB as well on the server.
The error references drv_girder.dll

If you look in the MB log, the exception logged always precedes the NR crash.

kurtlewis
May 19th, 2006, 10:34 AM
my tablet pc with the new NR client crashed today, same way.
I noticed though, the logged exception in NR does not get recorded until -after- I click OK to the windows error popup, which closes NR. As soon as I click ok to the error, the following is recorded in MB log. What follows the error is me re-starting NR.

So, same behavior.....

@blackswan What media player are you using with MediaBridge? And what version of MediaBridge?

Ben S
May 21st, 2006, 08:29 AM
Also, can you send me your MediaBridge log so I can see if it's something internal that is causing the problem.

FYI: I run my MediaPC 24x7x365 and haven't had it lock up yet. This is using JRMC 10.

So the app itself is pretty stable (in my configuration). Just need to find out what's different here.

One thing to check is to make sure your network drivers are up to date. This has helped people in the past.

Hey- the darn board system is not letting me know when someone posts to a subscribed thread.

Rob-
my windows xp pro laptop runs NRD and NR
my xp pro tablet pc runs NR and is dedicated for this purpose. it is the only app installed on hte tablet.
my server runs windows xp pro and handles Girder, JRMC, MB, ZoomPlayer, etc.
No firewalls, all running linksys G wifi cards and a new linksys G diversity access point / router.

Rob H
May 21st, 2006, 12:01 PM
Check the settings in the User CP to make sure that it's set to mail you about subscribed threads.

I'm just wondering if you'd have the same problem if you run Girder on the laptop rather than the server (as an experiment).

I assume you're running everything on the standard ports as well?

kurtlewis
May 21st, 2006, 12:56 PM
yup, i set this thread to 'instant notification' - and I just got one. But sometimes it doesn't work. anyway, not that big of a deal in the scheme of things :)

I'm running Girder on port 1024
MB on port 8080

Used to run everything on standard ports but it was crashing then too.

I suppose I could try running girder on my laptop, but that will take me hours to reconfig everything.... and my JRMC / music library is too large to move easily.
so if I just set up basic Girder on my laptop it really won't be a valid A-B test, since the config and dependencies will be much different.

One thing i know for sure though, is the crashes did not start until I started running the combination of Girder 4 and NR 2.0

Ben S
May 21st, 2006, 09:37 PM
Hold on, you're running G4 on port 1024? Isn't that the old G3 port?

kurtlewis
May 21st, 2006, 10:56 PM
yep- I had everything set up that way because when I was new to NR / Girder I started out using one of the ccf's for download- and it specified using port 1024 in the read-me.

Now, I know it should not matter what port it's using as long as there is no port conflict going on, and both sides are using the same port. Or is G4 particular about what port it's using?

I have tried using the default port for new Girder but it still crashes... Sort of went through that already trying to troubleshoot it myself.

Ben S
May 22nd, 2006, 04:22 PM
I wouldn't think that would make a difference.

If we can get it to bomb reliably in less time (versus waiting 24 hours) maybe GotoMyPc is the solution.

kurtlewis
May 22nd, 2006, 09:10 PM
that's the prob- I cannot get it to bomb on command... it's sporatic.

Hi Ben- I just got the latest .51 G4 release, latest MB and latest NR release installed. Unfortunately, i'm still having the sporatic crash in NR 'netremote.exe'. two days now, both days have had an NR crash after about 12-15 hours of it sitting idle overnight.

This bugger is still crashing quite regularly- I'd say it does it once or twice a day, and mostly happens between 11pm and 6am when the system is totally idle.

Ben- I have noticed (fairly consistently) that if I uncheck the weather update option in G4 that my NR clients no longer have the wierd crash.
Maybe this will help narrow things down as to a cause?

Ben- I have been running NR clients / G4 constantly without the weather update enabled in G4, and have had 0 crashes on any of my clients. This definitely seems to be the culprit.

Interesting! I've turned on weather here to see if I can reproduce the problem.

Kurt,

Can you turn weather back on again. When NR crashes, can you leave it 'running' and try to zip up the contents of the NetRemote\cache directory.

I'm conjecturing that there is a problem with your wifi connection every so often and that the image data that Girder is sending is becoming corrupted. Before NR decodes an image it writes it to the cache directory so if we can find a corrupted image there then we may be able to reuse it to reproduce the actual crash here.

Hi Rob-Sure thing, I'll fire the weather back up. Still no crashes with the weather off.
btw, I've had crashes on the NR client that runs on the same box as G4, so that might shoot down the spotty connectivity theory- So I guess we'll see, this sure is an odd problem!

Hi Rob- I just emailed you the contents of the cache directory following a NR crash today. It's 4mb zipped, so could not post here.

Rob- did you get my email with NR cache directory dump? Any thoughts on this? I'm sure you guys are busy but I'd love to get this resolved..

btw, I seem to experience less crashes in NR if I do not try and show weather icons (5-day, etc) in the NR client. So you may be on to something.

Yes, I got the email thanks. Unfortunately there was no corruption of any of the files there. There were a couple of images there that claimed to be GIF files (from the extension) but actually turned out to be JPEGs (from the data), but they were dated from March so I wouldn't have thought that they would be responsible for recent crashes.

You may as well empty out the cache directory (NR does it normally on shutdown, but since your copy tends to crash rather than shut down cleanly that explains the size of the cache).

I think Ben is intending to improve the error handling in the image code so maybe that will give us more information.

Sorry that it isn't better news.

ok- had yet another crash, although the frequency of crashes is much less if I do not try and use weather icon images in my NR CCF - I used to have the 5-day with 5 icons but now only show today's weather with one icon.

I purposely have not been browsing my music archive, to eliminate potential for one of the cover art images being the culprit. Attached cache.zip file was recorded while the NR client was idle for a day or so.

hope it helps? This crashing problem is awful!!

ok had yet another crash after restarting Girder while NR client was running. here's the cache file attachment. I was watching girder logger and the NR crash occurred right after girder was updating the weather.

Rob - Can we add weather update/resend to your G4 test suite? If we can rapidly resend weather we may be able to diagnose and resolve this.

Yep, will do

I've tested this by having NR request weather changes twice a second for well over an hour, and it continues to work appropriately. Hmmm.

Well Ben, I didn't say it was a normal problem... heh

All I can tell you for sure, 100% sure and from a non-technical perspective, is if I disable weather updates in G4 my NR clients do not crash.
Maybe there is something I can run here to catch specific errors, etc? My home lan connectivity between G4 and NR clients is all wifi.

Don't worry Kurt, I have been able to reproduce it, just not reliably.

Once Ben has sent me the latest sources I'll try to reproduce it when running in the debugger.

That's interesting - with 2.0.0.75 I don't get the same problem. I'd noticed yesterday that I would get an occasional error that would close the connection between NR and G4, which would then cause NR to lock and G4 CPU to rocket.

This no longer happens with 2.0.0.75 - that is, I'm still getting the occasional error, but NR is now happy and reconnects to G4 without a hiccup.

A bit later...

I spoke too soon :( just had the same error then NR locked up - something is clearly different with this version though. Very interesting. I wonder if there were two interacting problems e.g. the memory corruption when unregistering a variable watch and something else that we haven't found yet.

Great! (not the bug, but the fact that you've at least seen a bit of the problem as well:))
You may be able to reproduce the problem more reliably if you include more thumbnail weather images in NR- For example, I would experience the most crashes if I was displaying a 5-day forecast vs. just current day.
I've had same issues with G4 CPU utilization pegging 100% as well and had to hard-kill the app a few times through Task Manager. I did not relate it to the NR crashes since it wouldn't hapen simultaneously. G4 would mostly peg CPU if I was doing a settings change or hitting 'save'- This has been consistent across all builds so far and also while running grunt, so I figured it might be a different, unrelated problem.

Kurt - We may be on to something. Rob has been able to find a gotcha or two that -may- be causing this. We're working on it.

Thanks!

Update: I have installed Girder 4.0.6 and .76 NR, and (I believe) .66 MB
Same problems is occurring. If I leave weather updates turned off in Girder none of my Win32 NR clients crash. As soon as I turn it on, Win32 clients crash at least once per day.

Interestingly, I have just started running CE 4.2 NR on a 10.4" tablet PC. It does not crash at all like the XP-based Win32 NR clients if the weather updates are turned on. Maybe this info helps??

Ben S

That is strange that the CE 4.2 build doesn't exhibit the behavior.

kurtlewis
August 17th, 2006, 12:06 AM
CE client is still rock stable, even after fixing the Girder communication issue by setting the instance to (-2101). No crashes, my XP NR clients crash regularly if I leave the weather updates on in Girder. Using Girder 4.0.6 clean install and .76 clients.

One odd thing I noticed, which may or may not be of help.. If an XP NR client crashes and pops up the 'netremote encountered an error' windows dialogue my CE client (not crashed) is unable to send commands to Girder until I close the error on the XP client.
i'm not doing anything particular on the XP clients preceeding a crash. The client can just sit there idle on the home screen, not playing music or anything, and the crash just pops up.

anything I can do to help solve this? It's driving me crazy.

Ben S
August 19th, 2006, 05:48 PM
Quite interesting, sounds like it's definitely crashing in the girder driver, and while girder is actively communicating with it.

And you -never- see this on Pocket PC or your CE tablet? Only windows?

I've been lurking on this thread for quite a while due to similar problems but with (mostly) different symptoms. See http://www.promixis.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14586 (sorry- long thread because I didn't know what the problem was [still don't] ).

Recently, I encountered a problem with the G4 Weather plugin with the latest version of G4 (v4.0.7) which might have more diagnostics. See http://www.promixis.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15161
This correlates well to your symptoms so thought I'd post.

Hopefully this will help.

Ben- I have the latest NR and G4 release running, and I still have these crashes 1-2 times a day on my win32 clients. CE4.2 has never borked once. it has never stopped, i've just stopped complaining about it.

I'm totally stumped- but I tell you it is frustrating as heck to have to "reboot" NR so often! It is definitely linked to the weather. If i turn weather off and remove from my CCF, no problems.

I even upgraded my home network- Netscreen 5GT for the routing / firewall and a Cisco Aironet A/B/G wifi access point. Cisco G cards all around, except for the CE client.
My router logs and traffic analyzer show no latency, dropped packets / frames / retransmits or other network communication anomalies.

any thoughts at all? Can you build me an NR debug version to run?

Ben S

Is it possible that I can connect my debug version to your Girder? Open a port in your firewall, perhaps?

kurtlewis
March 8th, 2007, 09:13 PM
sure- i can set that up this weekend and send you my info. i'll forward out the standard G port / use standard password. Please PM me your IP so I may lock it down.

fyi- I've tried different CCF's (completely different, even default) to eliminate the ccf as a cause. you may need to remain connected for a day for the error to happen- make sure you have all weather options and images enabled in NR.

Ben- no can do. I have a P.O.S. SBC router/dsl modem in front of my Netscreen and it will not let me publish out the proper ports from my internal sever. SBC has been no help.

-Did I mention that SBC router/dsl modems suck?

any other ideas on how I can help assist with ferreting out the problem?

www.logmein.com (http://www.logmein.com) have a free servivce that I've used to let Rob and Ron onto my system, maybe this would work for you?

I could do that, but I'd prefer to be able to connect over the port so I can run it in my debugger for awhile. Darn.
