View Full Version : serial port redirect

I would like to translate incoming data from one type of software into code a device on the com port reads.

for example: A certain DVR software allows for PTZ camera controls and sends out a sequence of data over the com port. Can girder catpure this data and translate it before continuing the transmission to the port?

AA40302400 from program to #0P2200T2300 out to com port.

thanks for any direction!

Not directly, no - you'd need two more serial ports - feed the DVR output into one (using a crossover cable), translate it internally and then output it to a third serial port.

It's just possible that you could do this with a pair of virtual serial ports if you can find something that will both emulate the serial ports and allow you to link them up, but I'm not aware of anything like that.

In fact, something like this http://www.virtualserialport.com/products/vspdxp/ would seem to fit the bill. There may well be free alternatives.

so Im guessing it would go something like this:

DVR --> (code) Vcom3 --> Vcom2 --> Girder event in --> Com1 event out

if that makes any sense...

Yep, that's the idea
