October 13th, 2002, 04:55 PM
Any URL's for the proggy maybe?

This is pretty cool as a front end for dvd and cds.

October 13th, 2002, 04:55 PM
I don't know if you guys will like this idea, but on my HTPC I was looking for an easy way to design a front end control, and I came across autoplay menu maker. This program is for creating autoplay cd's. I designed one and just left it on my harddrive and linked normally to my programs. It works beautifully.

and media-box of course:

the software should be open source sometime soon now so that might speed up developement even more

Media box looks interesting how is Girder interaction with it ?

December 16th, 2002, 07:07 AM
I just posted a topic about this. Media Box uses the old girder file format:

On the music frontend front, there is the recent addition of the 4am Music Console beta (see website (http://www.overnighttech.com) and AVS thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=4e3fba7baab2987c40c0f5311b3a1c3f&threadid=188870&perpage=20&highlight=zoomplayer&pagenumber=1)) which offers a slick interface, similar to that of the ApeJukebox (www.apejukebox.com). The program is currently free, and looks very promising. I've got my hopes up.

January 5th, 2003, 01:45 PM
I use 4am media console coupled with 4am music console.
4am media console launches
- ZoomPlayer for my DVD needs
- Cineplayer 1.5 to play my avi's
- Dscaler to watch satellite tv over my HTPC
- Winamp to play CD's that I insert on the fly
4am music console uses winamp with the asio plugin, and it browses my music directories on Hard disk... I rip my cds via EAC+Lame codec.
All is Pronto operated, and I use Girder and IRA to achieve that level of control.
One issue I have, is that when I select a command that I associated to a 4am media button, to launch ZoomPlayer, even though the Player is showing on top, is 4am that is still selected, so my pronto commands don't work. I need to use alt/tab (via pronto and girder) to select ZP and then everything works perfectly.
Any ideas how to avoid alt/tabbing?

January 5th, 2003, 02:12 PM
the funny thing is that when I press the key 1 on the keyboard, ZoomPlayer starts and is selected, when I use the command I created (keyboard/sentence=1) ZP starts but is still 4am that is selected (Zp is maximized, so I cannot even see 4am but is still selected!).
I attached a picture to provide a better understanding

if you really want a nice front end, try Housebot, at www.cebotics.com

I'm slowly getting my whole house system and home theater configured,
as time allows. I'm using 5 touchscreen computers with it and it's the
best solution I've found yet.

The best thing I have found that has the most potential is the myHTPC (www.myhtpc.net) interface.

I'd like to add xlobby 2 (still in alpha but evolving real fast...and well):

June 20th, 2003, 12:44 PM
Which of these (or other) interfaces offer sendmessage support. I am currently playing with myHTPC and it is a very nice looking frontend, but I am still trying to resolve some of the control issues with getting it in the foreground and keeping it there. Please post your experience on these front end interfaces with girder integration, thanks.

As far as myHTPC goes, this is a known issue nad is fact being dealt with by the developer as I type this. Pablo is working on a totally new build called myHTC2 which specifically address this issue.

I am looking for a program that can convert DVD disc into images on hard disk, keeping all features of the disc .... if it support command lines will bea great thing ...

any ideas?

July 9th, 2004, 10:01 AM
DVDDecrypter will do it. I use it all the time. Command line interface available.

I love xlobby2, I had myhtpc before but it was not so good.

I'd really like to see an example of a combination of a .GML file and a Flash animation, if anyone has done anything with this. From what I can see, the potential is amazing. I picture my X10 motion sensors flashing the room in red on a 3-d map of my home when there is motion, then clicking on that room to see a camera feed.

July 27th, 2004, 06:18 PM
There was someone doing Flash via the HTML OSD... I can't remember who but it was within the last 6 months..

July 28th, 2004, 09:00 AM
Thanks. I will search for it a little later and post a link in this thread if anyone else finds it interesting.

July 28th, 2004, 01:22 PM
Ok, I found a link that covers a related issue quite extesively. In fact, you had referred to that post before for someone else a while ago.
I think that I'll have to try it myself to see if I can understand it. I don't have any experience with that so I guess it's one of those learn by doing things.

I am new to this but this seems to be the place to go for help. The posts seem to be old but who knows.

I have a touchscreen and a windows PC. I have aded Tira-2.1 and girder. I intend to control my AV home theater equipment throught IR remote. I will also add a Lutron Graphix eye to control the theater lights and then maybe some X-10 stuff. I am thinking of using Meedio HouseBot and Meedio Essentials.

Is this the best way? My Home theater equipment does not have RS232 ports so I decided to control them through IR using TIRA.

June 27th, 2005, 12:43 PM
For remote control, look at NetRemote.

July 22nd, 2005, 07:48 PM
I'm in the home automation bussines since '96, and wow! Now the real software is seeing the light.
I have a few Q though: I am no programmer, but look for a way to let Girder give me a status report on Netremote by toggling icons, with movement, lightswitching, ect.
I also tried to use Girder4 to connect to our inhouse developed bus system through the serial port, but to no avail. It's a normal ASCII communication with a 0D termination after the strings. Girder 3 did it real easy with the serial plugins, but 4 does not have the same type of setup.
Please guys, I need to impress some clients, hehe

Hi, post in the G4 forum and I will help you get going with the new serial plugin... we haven't had it documented yet...

This is an old thread but since I made my own research in the field of available front-ends, I would like to post here my findings for future information of anyone interested. When I got interested in HTPCs a few months ago I couldn't find a summarized info on the available frontends anywhere, so I spent a whole lotta hours in reading through forums on HTPCs and in googling on the matter. So here are the most popular, trendy and functional front ends available.

Free! Mimic http://uimimic.sourceforge.net/
Free! Chameleon http://www.xmission.com/~smesser/
Free! xLobby http://www.xlobby.com/
Free! MediaPortal http://sourceforge.net/projects/mediaportal/
Free! OpenHTPC http://www.openhtpc.com/
Free! XONE Media Center http://xone.official.ws
Free! CouchClick http://www.tvpc.com/software.html

Paid! MainLobby http://www.webpromotion.com/cinemar/mainlobby.html
Paid! J River MediaCenter 11 http://www.jrmediacenter.com/
Paid! Digital Theater http://www.binarymetal.com/dtpgeneral.html
Paid! 4am Media Console http://www.overnighttech.com/products/4amMC_overview.html
Paid! The Charmed Quark Controller http://www.charmedquark.com
Paid! QixMEDIA http://www.qixmedia.com/
Paid! Wellton Way MMC http://www.welltonway.se/
Paid! Meedio=MyHTPC http://www.meedio.com/
Paid! ShowShifter http://www.showshifter.com/
Paid! InterVideo Home Theater http://www.intervideo.com/jsp/HomeTheater_Profile.jsp

Out of all those that I have personally tested it on my computer, by far the best of all is Meedio (PAID) and Media Portal (Free). In my personal opinion Meedion is better, but after all it costs money. But the possibilities for its customizing are almost endless.
