View Full Version : Example of Capturing a window event - toggle Screen Saver

October 13th, 2002, 03:55 PM
To add a hotkey to toggle (disable/enable) the screen saver:
1. Download and install HotSpot 1.6:
This utility adds a little "sun" in the system tray that shows whether the screen saver is enabled or disabled. It also adds two "hotspots" to the screen: put the mouse pointer in the upper-left corner to stop the screen saver from starting, or put the pointer in the lower-right corner to start the screen saver (which corner is used for what function is configurable).
Put hotspot.exe (or a link to it) in your startup folder.
2. In Girder, make a new action of the "command" type, "command" function
3. Click the "Capture" button, then "Start Capture"
4. Right-click the HotSpot system-tray icon and select "Disable Screen Saver"
5. Back in Girder, click "Stop Capture" and select the action from the list for the executable "HOTSPOT.EXE" of type "Command" (The Wparam will be 201).
6. Test to make sure the command does what you want by clicking the "Test Event" button: The HotSpot icon should change from unlit to lit to show that the screen saver is re-enabled, and lit to unlit for disabled.
7. Click "ok" and then "apply" to save your new command.
8. Use "Learn" to associate your new action with a button and have fun! :smile:

isn't it much easier to change the ScreenSaveActive key in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop from 1 to 0 and back? IMHO it's exactly what that program does.
You can easely do it with the RegSetValue plugin (http://www.girder.nl/downloadn.php?Link=316).

Ooo, just saw the topic -- it was an example. That expaines a lot :wink:

I achivied the same goal by using WiZmo. It is a small utility, which offers to enable / disable the screensaver. You can call it directly from girder:

Execute command
--> file: wizmo.exe
--> Parameters: autoblank=0 quiet

You can download it from http://www.grc.com/wizmo/wizmo.htm

The tool does not run in the background all the time and shows no annoying command boxes or anything when you execute it :D

I use it to disable my screensaver when starting a WinAmp visualization. As Screensaver i use Powerdimmer, which dims the screen (like the XBox does). Looks cool 8)

Oooh, I saw the topic too late ... :lol:

Also look at the lua systems function plugin to do this directly.

That's all and well, but what about the _opposite_?
I'd like girder to launch a custom application (OSD menu) when the mouse is going to one corner of the screen... Is that possible?

You could setup a timer and check the mouse pos every second or less.

See attached file.
