I'm putting together a parts list for the UIRT2. I'm pricing out the different vendors such as digikey, newark and mouser.

My question is can I substitute the PIC16F84 for another Microcontroller? If I do a parts search out at mouser.com for PIC16F84 I get five results. The PIC16F84 listed is not stocked but the 4 others are and they are much cheaper. Can they be used as a substitute?

Here is a link to the mouser search results.

I believe I answered my own question. The answer is no because the PIC has 18 pins and the IC's I listed above only have 16. That should be enough to make them not compatible.
