View Full Version : Using a serial UIRT2 from Luc with newest features?

How would I go about bringing my year old UIRT2 firmware/girder driver up-to-date?

Would it perform as well as the USB-UIRT available now?

You see, I bought a pre-assembled internal (and an external) serial UIRT2 from Luc about a year ago.

At the time, the firmware/girder driver combination wouldn't learn Denon IR remote codes for transmission. I remember reading about a beta firmware that came out, but as I'd changed my motherboard to one without a WOL connector the UIRT2 went in the cupboard as I remained with my serial IRman.

thanks for and comments or experience,
rob.

The latest firmware (1.8) should handle all the Denon codes correctly.
You will need to reprogram te PIC and use the latest version of the Girder plugin.
If there's no WOL (or something similar) on your motherboard then you won't be able to power-up the system....

The reply seems to be a bit strange with that "smiley", I wanted to write firmware 1.8 but between "brackets" it generates a smiley........

Thanks for your clarification Luc.

I've done quite a bit of re-reading and have got a couple of questions, hopefully this'll make a mini FAQ for such things.

Q1: Is the 1.8 you refer to the uirt_1_8_test.zip firmware at http://www.geocities.com/jon_rhees/UIRT/?M=A

Q2: Do I program the firmware as per the instructions at http://www.fukushima.us/UIRT2/UIRT2B-Assembly.htm#Program%20the%20PIC which tells me to download the uirt programmer ICSP software written by Danijel Pticar, from http://free-zg.hinet.hr/DPM/uirt/uirt-dp.prog13.zip ?

Q3: Do I need to do anything with the jumper or extra power during re-programming the uirt firmware?

Q4: For the Girder plug-in, should I use the UIRT 2.0 03-July-2002 release or the UIRT(USB version) 2.5.9 25-June-2003?

Q5: Do you have a current recommendation for the Girder version that works well with the UIRT?

Thanks very much for your help.
regards,
Rob.

1: I think this is the correct one, you can also find it on my website: http://users.skynet.be/sky50985/

2: Yes that's the only program I know of wich works correctly. You can also find it on my website.

3: You have to remove the jumper, programming can work without applying the VPP (programming power), this depends on your PC. If it doesn't work you have to supply VPP from an external source, usually the 12V from a spare HDD connector will do the job.
One more important thing: If you reprogram a already programmed PIC (wich is your case) then you have to short the 2 pins of the crystal or remove the crystal. This is not required if the PIC is empty.

4: The USB plugin won't work: different protocol.

5: Looks like Girder is so well developed that the UIRT works on all versions (as far as I know).

Hope this helps.

Thanks Luc. I'm looking forward to re-installing and upgrading my internal UIRT2 from you on Sunday.

thanks and regards,
Rob.

The update went fine. I temporarily soldered across the crystal pins and removed the jumper.

I've now learnt and tested all my Denon IR commands, so now the HTPC can ensure it's turned on and on DVD at startup, CD and Stereo for WinAmp and powers down the amp at remote shutdown.

I'm aspecially happy as I'd already pre-wired the IR receivers and senders to the front of my room next to the projection screen, while the equipment is at the back.

The UIRT signals seem 100% reliable, whereas my RF pyramid repeaters (receiver at front, sender to equipment rack at back are often are a bit erratic with vol up/down, etc. In this situation the long sender/receiver leads the UIRT2b supports appear to work at a similar high quality to a properly wired IR distribution system.

I'm planning on using a nice small Sony DVD remote control and have Girder control the Denon AV amp for me itself.

Thanks Luc for your help and a great product.
regards,
Rob.

Rob and/or Luc,

I have also finally gotten back into this.

I have done everything here - reprogramming the PIC went OK. I used the 10MHz hex codes from UIRT_10MHZ_1_8.HEX and the programmer uirt-dp-prog13.exe

But, again, while trying to learn from my Denon 2801 receiver, I still get only the first set of progress bars. If I repeatedly press the button, I get the second set of progress bars to flash, but no completion.

I know it works for other equipment - I test with my VCR (Panny PVS 4690). Any help?

This is what I get from the IR Debug (Denon remote power on):

Should have loaded the included plugin - uirt.dll version 2.1 - sorry

New problem?

It learns the IR to completion. When I hit test in the plug-in, it sends the correct IR and when I test the Girder command, it sends the correct IR - ie it works.
This works with both the Denon amp and Panny VCR.

When I send the IR from the remotes, the Girder icon flashes, but there is no response from the Denon amp nor the VCR.

What am I missing?

Hi ramick,
It could be the IR you are sending from the remote clashing with the IR sent by the UIRT2.

I'm no expertm but there are a few options in the UIRT plug-in page, next to Learn. One to wait for IR silence before sending, the other is the re-send multiple. You might try changing those.

regards,
Rob.

Thanks Rob.

Yep, that seems to be the problem - I just set the multiple to 2 and the time a little longer. It works.

Now, time to program (learn) all this and switch to this remote for everything.

Thanks again.
